The Nut

The humble nut spaces the strings at the pointy end of the neck, and determines their height above the ebony fingerboard.

If the nut is not correctly adjusted, your bass will be way too hard to play. THIS IS VERY COMMON!

What to look for:

  • Strings should be evenly spaced across the nut, measured centre to centre.
  • Strings spaced about 9-10mm apart.
  • Strings should be no higher than the thickness of ONE business card above the fingerboard.
  • Strings should cross the nut evenly and the windings should not be opening up
  • Strings should sit about 1/3rd their thickness in the nut slots, no more

If you find any of the above conditions are NOT met, then you are probably making life hard for yourself. Your bass can be easier to play, and sound better too!
