carving a bridgeThe Bridge

The bridge transmits the vibration of the strings to the carved soundboard of the bass. It must fit exactly, be the right height and thickness, and space the strings correctly for your style of playing. It should also look nice.

I start out with an oversize bridge blank and carefully fit the feet to the surface of the bass.

Then, I adjust the crown of the bridge to the correct string height. If you want an adjustable bridge, I can fit adjuster wheels as well.

The top of the bridge can be thinned depending on the response required.

If you use a pickup, this is often fitted to the bridge as well at this point.

Finally, I smooth the edges and carve neat chamfers around the perimeter of the bridge to make it look elegant. This stage is optional, but really gives a "finished" effect to an otherwise plain bridge blank. You spend quite some time looking at your bridge, so you want it to be nice, I think.
