Shortening a neck PDF Print

The trouble with this bass is that the string length is 44". That's about 2.5" longer than most players like, and to be a comfortable bass, the neck needs to be shortened.

First i mark out a long diagonal line on the neck.



then carefully cut along the line.



The result is dramatic!





A precise amount of wood is removed and the two surfaces mated together exactly



the spline is reglued bringing the neck back to 41.5"



The result is a nearly invisible glue line that needs to be rounded and smoothed



and reinforced with a graphite insert for added stiffness and strength

The finished spline graft is virtually invisible:
