This is the scroll I am trying to copy.
This is the basic form of scroll carved out of Blackheart Sassafras from Tasmania
I mark out the decoration on the back of the scroll, and score the curved lines deeply with a knife and gouges.
Then I remove the waste from the sides to let the pattern out in relief.
The leaves are given more detail with a fine curved gouge
The pattern is rounded and burnished, and then the flat areas are stippled with a punch. after stippling, I wet the grain sligtly to soften the effect.
This is the scroll after several coats of varnish.
This is the finished scroll, with antiqued tuners to match the look of the instrument.
